The streak chilled many fans in Montreal during the broadcasts of Caufield’s games. The number 8 who nonchalantly folds as Arizona State takes the opportunity to bring the score to 6-2 in the third period.
A player can have a bad game. To abandon? No, and Granato made him suffer the consequences by making him miss a few appearances.
“Sometimes when your players don’t live up to expectations, they need to sit down and watch the game for a little while,” he says.

Defensive play is one aspect Granato puts a lot of emphasis on with Caufield. The Badgers pilot tries to make his colt the most complete player possible. In the National Hockey League, Caufield will only receive playing time if he gets his coach’s confidence.
“Obviously he’s not perfect, you saw him in the series against Arizona State,” Granato admits. But then you see his response against Ohio and you’re like, okay, there’s some progress, some great development here. ”
Not the Caufield you knew
This year Caufield has made some dramatic changes to his style of play. It’s pretty striking, actually. He has more control over the puck.
It must be said that the young man has not always had the opportunity to do so in the previous two seasons. When he played with Jack Hughes or Alex Turcotte, his mentality was different: he applied himself to finding the gaps in the offensive zone and escaping the cover of the opposing defenders.
“He really focused on his ability to control the puck coming out of the defensive zone,” notes Granato. It carries the disc more often. I don’t know if this is ideal for his game, but he has gained confidence in it. And he wants that to become one of his strengths. That’s the biggest difference from last year, I think. ”
By working hard in the gym, Caufield has also taken physical maturity to another level, which bodes well for his eventual arrival with the Canadiens.

“His power in general has increased considerably,” observes Granato. You’ve seen him absorb hits with his strength. His power on the puck has reached another level as well. There is also his first stride to break away from the traffic which is excellent so far. ”
The outbreak of Gorniak
In the shadow of Caufield, Jack Gorniak, another CH prospect, takes his ease in his third year with the Badgers.
Gorniak has never scored more than four goals or amassed more than 15 points in a season in the NCAA. But he is hatching offensively, he who claims eight points in 10 games since the start of the 2020-2021 calendar.
–
“His confidence level is completely different from last year,” says Granato. You can begin to see him as a fourth line player in the NHL who is difficult to face and can help offensively. He is a tireless worker. He is strong.”
Gorniak, 21, was chosen in the fourth round (123rd overall) by the Habs in the 2018 amateur auction.
“You should know that when he came to the NCAA, he was just graduating from high school in Wisconsin,” says Granato. The transition was tough and took some time. And last year we had a lot of talented players up front, so he didn’t really have the opportunity to show off in an attacking role. This year, he is taking advantage of his chance and he will only continue to improve. ”
In bulk
► At the start of the season, Caufield formed a trio with Linus Weissbach and Ty Pelton-Byce. When the latter was injured, Granato reunited Caufield and his older brother, Brock. “The two brothers had a lot of fun together,” says Granato. They showed great chemistry in the power play. ”
► Two Badgers vs Michigan State meetings scheduled for December 8 and 9 have been postponed due to COVID-19 cases within the team. When the NCAA Big 10 conference (in which the Badgers play) unveiled its schedule in early November, it only contained the schedule for the first 12 games of each roster. After 10 games, the Badgers find themselves on hiatus and await the schedule for their second portion of the season.
► Caufield wouldn’t have been in those two games anyway, as he joined the US National Team’s training camp for the World Junior Championship. This will be his second participation in this tournament, he who had contented himself with a goal and an assist in five games during his first experience. Caufield should get a very important role this year. “He’s coming up there on a good streak,” says Granato.
