This title was given to Ghanem, because he was able to succeed in his scientific and professional life, without his disease, the “caudal retraction syndrome”, being an obstacle to the realization of his dreams and aspirations.

What is Caudal Retraction Syndrome affected by Ghanem Al-Moftah?
Disorder affecting the development of the lower half of the body, which includes the digestive system, lower back, legs, feet, urinary system, and reproductive organs.

Symptoms of caudal retraction syndrome
1- Deformity of the vertebral depth and of the lower limbs
The bones of the lower spine and the corresponding parts of the spinal cord are deformed or missing.
The vertebrae around the spinal cord may be incompletely closed.
A fluid-filled cyst in the lower back.
Respiratory problems, due to the effect of spinal deformities on the chest.
The thigh bones are small and the buttocks are flat.
Abnormal leg bones and decreased sensation.
2- Anomalies of the genitourinary system
Horseshoe kidneys, also known as “shoe kidneys”.
– Urinary tract infection.
Sometimes kidney failure.
Bladder abnormalities.
Deformation of the nerves that control bladder function.
– The appearance of the urinary hole in males in the lower part of the penis and testicles.
Abnormal connection between the rectum and the vagina in females.
– Lack of development of the genitals in the most serious cases.
3- Abnormalities of the digestive tract
Anal obstruction.
– inguinal hernia.
Loss of bowel control, causing constipation or diarrhea.

Causes of caudal retraction syndrome
There is no clear cause for caudal retraction syndrome, but it is commonly believed among researchers that blockage of oxygenated blood flow to the caudal region of the fetus may be due to the following risk factors:
Gestational diabetes: 16% of babies with caudal retraction syndrome had it in their mothers.
Drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
Exposure to retinoic acid.
Imbalance of amino acids during pregnancy.

Caudal retraction syndrome diagnosis
Caudal retraction syndrome is diagnosed in the fetus before birth, using certain tests, in particular:
Ultrasound imaging.

Treatment of caudal retraction syndrome
Doctors are content to prescribe medications to control the symptoms of caudal retraction syndrome, as there is no definitive treatment for it. In some cases, surgery becomes necessary to repair deformities of the reproductive system and spine.
