Cats and leashes – Want cats on a leash

It was Saturday that biologist Per Espen Fjeld shared his thoughts on the Facebook page Færdertinget.

– Why do cat owners not take responsibility in the middle of the breeding season? They know that it kills protected birds !, Fjeld writes in the post.

Furthermore, he asks:

– Is it allowed to kill protected birds with a cat – even during the breeding season?

– Takes red-listed species in abundance

Fjeld says that he is aware that he throws out a fire torch when he writes like that, but therefore suggests leashes on cats, to protect the birds.

It writes local newspapers Tønsbergs Blad.

According to Fjeld, Norwegian cats kill around seven million birds a year, which he believes is “an insane amount”.

– When it comes to a dog that has taken a deer, it is of course ugly and should be avoided, but for nature it actually has no significance. We hunt around 30,000 deer a year. Cats, on the other hand, take protected and red-listed species galore, he says to Tønsbergs Blad.

Avoid unnecessary damage

He explains that the wildlife law in Norway says that everything that is not hunted is protected.

During the breeding season (April 1 to August 20) there is a leash requirement for dogs. At the same time says the Biodiversity Act that «in any activity unnecessary damage and suffering to wild animals and their nests, nests or dens shall be avoided».

According to Fjeld, this means that almost all small birds are protected. He therefore questions whether it is allowed to release domestic animals – with knowledge and will – when it is known that they kill protected birds.

– It is okay?

Fjeld claims that the fact that cats kill huge numbers of protected birds is well documented facts.

– The discussion must be how we should relate to it. Cat owners who release cats at this time accept with open eyes that chicks and squirrel cubs are starving to death because their cat has killed the adults. Is it okay ?, he says to local newspapers.

The biologist therefore believes that cat owners should at least keep their cats indoors during the breeding season, put on bells and give them plenty of food so they do not hunt.

He himself had preferred that people use leashes on the cat, or that it be aired in enclosed places. He thinks it is unproblematic to keep cats on a leash, and that cats are fine in a controlled life.

– Have more control

He emphasizes to Dagbladet that he does not propose restraint for cats in the same way as with dogs.

– But it would have been smart to have more control. I know deep down that it is quite unrealistic to introduce restraint overnight, but I want to raise the issue and make cat owners aware of the responsibility they have, he says.

He believes they should be aware of what they are doing when they acquire pets, and take responsibility for what the animals do.

– If they just let the cat out the door, it will return in a few days – good and full – what have the owners done then?

He says that the bird species that are very common in Norway are the same ones that live in what is called the “cultural landscape”.

– Killed by cats

There are areas where there are typically many cats, with scattered residential areas along the edges of the land.

– Birds of the field field species have been found, which have been killed by cats. There are less than 25 couples left in all of Norway. Åkerrikse live in a typical biotope in which cats wander, says Fjeld.

Another species that according to the biologist is in free fall is vipa.

– Farmers there have been good and marked nests so as not to drive on them with a tractor. The kittens can not fly, so they run around the edges of the ground – exactly the same area that the cats walk in, he says, and warns:

– It is very likely that things will go wrong.
