. Cats eat birds – so far, so natural. But do Germany’s most popular pets pose a threat to native bird species? The discussion about this has been going on for years, it is often heated and the facts are not always clear. This also applies to the Freiburg region.
“It’s just a very emotional topic,” says Johannes Linnemann from the Musella Foundation for a socio-ecological future in Freiburg. “But it’s a mistake to blame the decline in songbird populations solely on cats. You can’t neglect humans.” Concrete and reliable figures on the role of cats in the decline of native bird species are difficult to find. It is estimated that around 200 million birds are killed by cats in Germany every year. But the problem begins with this number: the number of birds killed cannot be directly used to determine the endangerment of a population.
