The recently unveiled Mercedes-Benz CLA concept suggests that even one of the world’s oldest automakers is aware of the relevance of using lithium and iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, as they are cheaper to manufacture. The Chinese company CATL is going to localize the assembly of its latest LFP type batteries in Germany and Hungary following China.

This was at the IAA Mobility event in Munich, as reported by Reuters, said CATL Chief Engineer Gao Pengfei. Just last month, the Chinese manufacturer introduced a new generation of LFP batteries, designated Shenxing, which not only has a high energy storage density (due to optimizing the layout of the elements), but also a high charge replenishment rate. So, at room temperature, using an express charging station, you can restore up to 80% of the nominal charge of the traction battery in just 10 minutes. Even at negative temperatures down to minus 10 degrees Celsius, the charging time will not exceed 30 minutes. At the same time, the operation of the Shenxing family battery at such temperatures will have less effect on the ability of the electric vehicle to accelerate to 100 km / h in the time indicated in the passport characteristics.

In China, the production of Shenxing family batteries at CATL enterprises will be launched before the end of this year, and next year they will appear as part of mass-produced electric vehicles. Over time, the production of these batteries, as a company representative explains, will be launched at enterprises in Germany and Hungary. The first is already in operation since December 2022, and the second should be put into operation within two or three years, and become the largest for CATL in Europe. When exactly the production of Shenxing family batteries will be launched in Europe, and who will become CATL customers in this direction, has not yet been specified.
