Catholic School Students Return to Classrooms in Brooklyn and Queens Amidst Heat and Excitement

Despite the heat, with smiles, backpacks full of school supplies and prayers, 30,000 Catholic school students returned to classrooms in Brooklyn and Queens.

“This is a very exciting day when the children return. We are used to the noise of children playing and they are happy to see their friends and their teachers,” said Edwin Ortiz, parochial vicar, St. Athanasius Church.

The county bishop welcomed hundreds of students from first through eighth grades to St. Athanasius Academy in Bensonhurst, where Darwin Lema’s three children attend.

“I feel happy because they are back to school. The child was at home, so very good,” said Lema.

Motto.

This school year is marked by the closure of twelve schools in Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten Island that depend on the Archdiocese of New York. Other Latino parents see advantages in Catholic education.

Benavides.

“I chose the Catholic school since my daughter studied here because I think the teaching is much better,” said Daniela Benavides. “I am Catholic and that is very important to me and also because there are fewer students and since there are fewer students it seems to me that they can learn more than in public schools.”

The Diocese of Brooklyn is home to 69 Catholic elementary schools and 15 high schools in the borough and Queens.
