Secondary schools that want to focus on digital teaching must not be slowed down. That says Lieven Boeve, CEO of Catholic Education Flanders, Tuesday in De Standaard.

Several schools in Flanders want to continue distance learning in the coming school year, although they are no longer obliged to do so. Due to the limited epidemiological impact, it was decided last Friday to have schools open full-time on 1 September. “Anyone who wants to continue to teach physically full-time should certainly be able to do so,” says Boeve. “But we must not slow down the schools that want to focus on digital teaching and distance learning. For those schools it is currently unclear whether or not they can proceed with their plans. “

Flemish Minister of Education Ben Weyts (N-VA) emphasizes in a response that “each school is responsible for organizing the teaching times, as in pre-corona times”. But Catholic Education requires more clarity. “We certainly don’t want to make distance learning compulsory, but we do want to give schools the opportunity to use it,” says Boeve.
