NEW YORK – With just a few days before the Thanksgiving celebration, various New York City sites have taken it upon themselves to donate turkeys and food so that families who need it most can have their dinner during this celebration.
That is why Cardinal Timothy Dolan, of the Archdiocese of New York, and Catholic Charities of New York, will distribute turkeys on Tuesday, November 24, an event they hold every year, this time outdoors and following biosecurity guidelines for COVID-19, they said in a statement.
A total of 250 turkeys will be donated to the neediest families. Families will also receive food to cook and accompany the turkey, (such as yams, potatoes and apples). In total they will give about 20,000 pounds of food as gifts.
The cardinal will be accompanied by Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, executive director of Catholic Charities of New York. The cardinal will also comment on the meaning and importance of community as we enter a holiday season marked by the pandemic. Monsignor Sullivan will also speak about the work of Catholic Charities to combat hunger and food insecurity, as well as its prevention of homelessness and its affordable housing programs.
