The organization Catholic Charities of New York or offers help to hundreds of immigrants who come to the City, offering them everything from legal advice to English courses.
This organization founded in 1917 brings together dozens of churches in the Big Apple that offer different types of assistance to low-income people, immigrant families and in general to anyone who needs it.
They even point out that it is not necessary to be Catholic to receive this type of aid.
Given the immigration crisis that the City is experiencing, the different churches and organizations that are part of Catholic Charities offer legal services to immigrants.
While those who have an advanced citizenship process can receive help to complete the process.
English classes
Among the services they offer are English as a Second Language or ESL classes for both minors and adults.
One of the centers where they offer free classes is located in the Bronx, at 377 East 145th Street.

Legal advice and help with citizenship
For those who already have a citizenship process started or are seeking to complete it, the association also provides help and training with the process.
In the case of those immigrants who need some type of legal support, they can also turn to Catholic Charities to receive advice on immigration issues.
“We have a lot of attorneys who are almost at capacity, but we also have clinics that are helping people fill out applications themselves,” explained Kelly Agnew Barajas, director of the refugee area.
Help with child care
Among the services they provide are help with daycare or extra activities for minors.
Through organizations like Casita María, they offer academic support and general help with classes for children up to 12th grade.

On the institution’s site You can find all the help available ranging from food, help with clothing to help finding affordable housing apartments.
“We have diapers of different sizes, shampoo, soap, all the things that people who come with nothing need,” said Kelly Agnew Barajas, coordinator of the organization.
