Ark Invest, the fund of US star investor Cathie Wood, recently presented its annual report for the year ended July 31, showing significant losses.
Ark’s leading Innovation-ETF recorded losses of $3.5 billion (approximately €3.3 billion) between July 31, 2023 and July 31, 2024. Across all eight of Ark’s innovation and disruption-focused ETFs, total losses were $21.7 billion (approximately €20.7 billion), according to the annual report.
The last few years have been difficult for speculative Growth stockswhich Ark funds have focused on. The losses followed the end of speculative trading in 2021 as investors retreated from the loss-making companies that Ark Invest invested heavily in due to high inflation and rising interest rates.
In July, the Financial Times pointed out a now-deleted thread on X in which Ark-CEO Cathie Wood defended her fund’s losses: “Our equity trading losses should offset equity trading gains in the coming years, a little-recognized strength of our strategies,” Wood said in the post.
The Ark Innovation ETF is down 9 percent year-to-date and 70 percent below its peak. Ark Invest did not respond to a request for comment.
