In the last sports date of 2023

Event Catherine Debrunner, the fastest wheelchair athlete in the world, comes from the canton of Thurgau and has been paraplegic since birth. But she is living her dream. She is European champion, world champion and Paralympic champion. Debrunner is also a five-time world record holder in the 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 meters.

Simply unique

Catherine Debrunner: “My biggest highlight was my victory in the New York Marathon with a new course record. The atmosphere around it was unique and I enjoyed my stay in the USA.” Catherine Debrunner has been in military uniform since 2022. The top sports RS in Magglingen has also been open to paraathletes for two years. “As the first woman in a wheelchair, I was able to benefit greatly from this offer,” notes the likeable woman from Thurgau. This also allowed her to expand her network and make friends with other athletes. Debrunner also receives financial support from the military.

The fastest in the world loves to travel. «I love the sea and the sandy beaches. Actually, I can do everything – I just can’t walk.” Debrunner enjoys training in Holland: “There are great bike paths there.” Next year the Paralympics in Paris are on their program. For now, however, she is doing a training camp on Tenerife and a trip to Dubai is also planned.

A big supporter of sports

Marco Mudry, commander of the Army’s Sports Competence Center in Magglingen, promotes top military sports. Under him, para-athletes also receive access to the top sports RS – an important step in terms of inclusion. Half of the medals were won by participants in top military sports.

In the “Attention, get ready, camera” section, the Winterthur archery team showed off their skills. The club was founded in 1953 and has over 80 active shooters. ⋌Robert Blaser
