Two people were killed and 22 were injured, including four minors, in an attack on the port city of Odesa on Sunday night, Ukrainian authorities say.
According to the governor of the Odesa region, Oleh Kiper, six residential buildings, including a block of flats, were hit in the attack.
The historic cathedral and several museums in Odesa’s Old Town, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, also suffered extensive damage.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims in an announcement that the cathedral was completely destroyed in the attack and calls it a war crime.
– This was a war crime that will never be forgotten or forgiven, it says.
Unmanned boats
Moscow claims to have hit all targets it wanted to attack in the port area of Odesa and charges Ukraine for having used the area to prepare terrorist acts against Russia.
– Last night, Russian forces carried out an attack against places where terrorist acts were being prepared in which unmanned boats were to be used, says an announcement from the Russian army.
– All planned targets were destroyed in the attack, it is further stated.
Promise answer
Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea in the past week. Earlier this week, the country withdrew from the grain agreement that gave Ukraine the opportunity to export grain via these ports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi promised on Sunday that the Russians would respond to the latest attack.
– Rockets against peaceful cities, against residential buildings and a cathedral. The Russian terrorists will definitely receive a response to the attack on Odesa. They must know that we reciprocate, he says.
