Cathedral churches in Vienna and Linz ring for peace for seven minutes

St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna and Mariendom in Linz will ring for peace for seven minutes on Thursday afternoon. The two largest cathedral churches in Austria are thus participating in an initiative of the “European Association of Cathedral Builders, Minster Builders and Builders”. “We, the community of those responsible for the construction of the major cathedrals and cathedral churches in Europe from Norway to Malta and from Spain to Ukraine, do not want to remain silent about the war in Ukraine,” it said in a broadcast. According to the Association of Cathedral Builders, every minute that the bell rings represents a day since the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral will also be one of the European focal points of solidarity and compassion with the people of Ukraine on Thursday evening: Its west facade will be painted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. – at the same time as many other public buildings in Vienna and Austria illuminated in blue and yellow, as the cathedral parish of St. Stephan announced.

An evening “Concert for Peace” with artists from Ukraine as well as from Russia, Austria and other countries is also planned for next Tuesday (8 March) in St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Details on this will be announced later. Other initiatives include prayer boards that will be installed in St. Stephen’s Cathedral from the beginning of next week, on which believers can pin concerns and prayers, as well as an online intercession box from the cathedral parish to pray with people for their concerns.
