Cathedra Bordeaux 2024 Season: Concerts, Artists, and Heritage | France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine Partnership

Cathedra is a communion between music and heritage to allow as many people as possible to discover religious buildings from a different angle. And to do this, around thirty concerts are offered in Bordeaux for the 2024 season, in partnership with France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

The Cathedra association was born from a few enthusiasts who shared a love of music and religious heritage. Created in 2014, its mission is to develop and promote sacred music and the organs of Saint-André Cathedral in Bordeaux. An alchemy that has borne fruit for a decade with great initiatives and great programming thanks to the motivation of a team of volunteers. And if it is necessary to guarantee the quality of what is proposed, Cathedra is placed under the joint artistic direction of Alexis Duffaure (Choir director of the Bordeaux Opera and chapel master of the cathedral) and Jean -Baptiste Dupont (organist of the cathedral organ).

Concerts of vocal, instrumental, chamber music or even organ recitals, all genres are part of the cultural life of the historic center of Bordeaux every year, at the heart of two emblematic places: the Saint-André cathedral and the Notre-Dame church.

To celebrate its ten years of existence, the new programming has been particularly well thought out to offer a rich and varied selection made up of around thirty concerts until October 18. And in the desire to share and open this musical experience to as many people as possible, it should be noted that around fifteen concerts are free or open to participation.

While an important place is always given to local artists, many prestigious concerts also feature internationally renowned foreign musicians, bringing together more than one hundred and twenty professional musicians in total. Like the Hungarian pianist Suzana Bartal, one of the rising talents of the new generation, who launched the 2024 season.

To appeal to all music lovers, a wide diversity of musical eras is offered, from Hildegard von Bingen to the most contemporary repertoire defended by the Diotima Quartet, including the Renaissance era and the Baroque period. Mozart, Fauré, Puccini are just a few examples of illustrious authors to listen to in the overall programming of Chair.

The secret of Cathedra: combining the magic of the place with the quality of the guest artists! This clever mix allows us to offer unforgettable musical evenings in Bordeaux.

And if we had to particularly remember a few, you should know that two exceptional concerts will be produced in co-production with the National Choir of the Bordeaux Opera, a new feature for the 2024 season.

  • “Arvo Pärt and Diana Soh, crossed portraits” on Wednesday March 6 at 8 p.m.: it is a few hundred meters from the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, at the Notre-Dame church, that the Choir of the National Opera of Bordeaux travels exceptionally to play the scores of two contemporary composers, one Estonian and the Another Singaporean, from two different generations and musical visions.
  • “Puccini, Messa di Gloria” on Wednesday, June 19 at 8 p.m.: Saint-André Cathedral was chosen for this concert of sacred music by the Italian composer. From his Mottetto per San Paolino to his Requiem via his famous Messa di Gloria, Giacomo Puccini’s greatest arias will resound majestically in this magnificent setting.

Also committed to the conservation and promotion of French heritage, Cathedra is committed to participating in the financing of the restoration of the great organs of the Saint-André cathedral in Bordeaux through the patronage.

This work will consist of the construction of a new instrumental part while restoring the buffet classified as a historic monument. Considerable work which should begin in the fall of 2024 and which, according to the forecast schedule, will end with the return of the great organ at the end of 2028.

And on the same subject, Cathedra will honor another organ of the cathedral, the recently restored choir organ, during the closing concert of the season around the concertos of Handel and Poulenc.

The people of Bordeaux could not escape the end of year event at the Saint-André cathedral in Bordeaux with the immersive experience Luminiscence which played overtime for three weeks to cope with demand and accommodate up to 95,000 people. A real success for this scenography enhancing the architecture of the building accompanied by music, under the musical direction of Alexis Duffaure, in collaboration with Cathedra who gave several live concerts during the event.
