Drivers with a category B driving license may use a car with a permissible total weight not exceeding 3.5 tons. However, there was a demand to increase the limit without the need to pass additional exams, and all thanks to electric cars.
Driving license changes: electrics may be heavier
The amendment to the act on electromobility, which was signed by the president, changes, inter alia, record on the permissible total weight. Soon, a category B license holder will be able to drive a vehicle with a maximum authorized weight not exceeding 4,250 kg, provided that the greater weight is due to the use of alternative fuels. The second condition is an internship – the driver must have been licensed for at least two years.
Alternative fuels are included in the regulation on technical conditions of vehicles. Therefore, the changes concern electric, hydrogen, CNG, LNG and LPG gas drives. In reality, however, it is mainly about electric vehicles, and the reason for the change in regulations are batteries, which make such cars much heavier than cars with other power supply.
Driving license changes: delivery vans will benefit the most
The problem was mainly related to electric varieties of vans. People and companies deciding to buy such a car had to accept not only a shorter range than an internal combustion car, but also a smaller payload, which is a big problem for a car whose main task is to transport cargo. The differences were quite significant, because an ordinary delivery truck can transport about 1.5 tons on a “pace”, where the load limit of the same model with an electric motor may be 500 kg lower. Everything, of course, is due to regulations, not technical conditions. Thanks to this amendment, this problem will no longer arise.
