The US National Hurricane Center warned on Tuesday that Hurricane Otis, which threatens the tourist city of Acapulco on the western coast of Mexico, has become stronger and has become “extremely dangerous” and “possibly catastrophic.”
The center said that Otis, which was classified just hours ago as a Category 3 hurricane, had increased in strength to become a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, which consists of five ascending categories.
He added, “Otis is expected to be a potentially catastrophic Category 5 hurricane” when it makes landfall in the Acapulco area.
The center expected that the hurricane’s strength would begin to decline as it advanced into the Mexican mainland.
Currently, the eye of the hurricane is located over the Pacific Ocean, 135 km south of Acapulco, accompanied by strong winds exceeding 230 kilometers per hour.
