Cate Blanchett appears to be in trouble with the law after neighbors accuse her of ruining family holidays for tourists and locals alike with construction noise at her property in the picturesque North Cornwall town of Mawgan Porth.
The two-Oscar-winning actress and her husband, playwright Andrew Upton, bought the cottage in 2020 for €1.8 million.
The original structure has now been demolished to make way for a five-bedroom house, following the granting of planning permission in 2022.
The owner of a holiday home in the area, Karen Burgess, lodged an appeal with Cornwall Council, claiming the losses were in excess of £60,000 and that her customers were constantly complaining.
«We thought the work on the property was finally over and now there is a new application for earthworks. These works should not be allowed during the holiday season. Never before in the area have we experienced such blatant disregard for the visitors who come here for their holidays as well as the enjoyment of the area by the residents».
According to the Guardian, the famous couple also want to build a new entrance to the property and a car park on another plot of land they bought in 2021.
For its part, the London-based architecture firm Watershedd, which has undertaken the construction of Blanchett’s house, denied the accusations and stated, among other things, that “our clients property has been mixed up with other works being done in Mawgan Porth».
