Catastrophic Shortage of Workers in the Russian Federation: Impact of War and Emigration on Russian Industries

There is a catastrophic shortage of workers in the Russian Federation. Due to Russia’s large-scale war against Ukraine, the mobilization announced by President Vladimir Putin and the record emigration, almost half of Russian industrial enterprises were left without qualified specialists.

According to data from the Russian Academy of Sciences, the shortage of personnel in Russia in 2023 amounts to about 5 million people, reports FREEDOM TV. The shortage of personnel that gripped Russia after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the mobilization and emigration of hundreds of thousands of Russians set an absolute record since 1996.

The Gaidar Institute for Economic Policy reports that in January 2024, 47% of managers of industrial enterprises complained about a lack of qualified specialists.

Even raising wages does not help to attract specialists. Over the past five years, employers have started posting 1.8 times more vacancies. The shortage of workers provokes high competition for them. Because of this, the wages offered are rising.

The shortage of personnel in Russia is felt in all sectors of the economy, experts say. A shortage of skilled workers is slowing Russia’s economy, which has already been hit hard by sanctions and capital flight. The Russian central bank has acknowledged that staff shortages are one of Russia’s main problems. Because of the war, many skilled Russians fled abroad, and currently the Russian economy is on a military basis. Or to put it another way, it’s all about Putin’s war.
