Catastrophic Impact of Western Sanctions on Russian Car Factories: 50% Shut Down, Lagging Production

Enterprises were unable to return to work even after the change of owner; car production in the Russian Federation lags behind demand.

Western sanctions buried half of the car factories in Russia. Before the introduction of restrictions, there were 22 large enterprises operating in Russia, producing cars from the mass market to the premium segment, but 50% of them could not survive the sanctions and did not return to work even after a change of owner.

These figures are given by “Kommersant”.

For example, a catastrophic situation has developed at the former Volkswagen plant in Kaluga, control over which, after the German concern left the Russian market, is now exercised by a Russian company. Now there is a massive layoff of workers, and German equipment in the workshops is being sawed up to free up space and use the premises as warehouses for cars from the Chinese automobile industry. Over the past two months alone, 1.3 thousand employees have left this plant under pressure from the administration, which is more than 30% of the total staff.

The Russian government hoped to transfer the assets of Western companies that had left the Russian market to new investors, primarily Chinese, but they never made a single serious purchase.

Against the backdrop of these problems, car production in Russia this year has lagged behind demand.

Earlier, the Russian AvtoVAZ complained of serious financial and technological problems due to Western sanctions. The company reported that even countries “friendly” to the Russian Federation are joining the sanctions regime.

Let us recall that in August it became known that Georgia blocked the import of European and American cars into Russia, joining the ban of the European Union and the United States on the supply of cars to the Russian Federation.
