Catastrophic drought and war in Ukraine caused famine in Somalia / Article

The last time a famine was officially declared in a country in the world was in 2011, and that time it was also in Somalia. Thousands of Somalis have already died.

According to the UN, up to 500,000 children under the age of five could die of malnutrition.

Somalis say the drought in the region is the worst they have ever experienced.

Somalia has suffered in the past many waves of famine, but currently the situation is aggravated by several geopolitical events: the war started by Russia in Ukraine, the reduction of humanitarian aid and the activity of radical Islamists.

Before the war in Ukraine, Somalia bought at least 90% of its wheat directly from Russia and Ukraine, but due to the war this is no longer possible and the price of wheat on the world market has risen significantly.

Due to the war in Ukraine initiated by Russia, the flow of humanitarian aid to Somalia has also decreased, as many organizations have invested resources to help Ukrainian refugees.
