Risk of a catastrophe in Romania. The defense dyke at Mahmudia, in the western area of Carasuhat, gave way and the water invaded an area with agricultural crops on several hundred hectares, destroying everything in its path. The dike currently has a breach of about 8-10 meters, but it is constantly widening, being in a critical situation. The people of the area say that the surface flooded up to this moment exceeds 200 hectares and that it was an area where organic agriculture is practiced, through European funds.
The dam project was carried out by the Mahmudia Municipality
The dyke was made in the framework of the project “Ecological reconstruction of the lands belonging to the public domain of the Mahmudia Local Council within the Carasuhat agricultural precinct in the Danube Delta” carried out by the Municipality of Mahmudia several years ago, the work carried out raising difficulties for the local authority this year .
“Following the issues presented by the mayor of the Mahmudia commune, Şerpescu Ion, as president of the Local Committee for Emergency Situations, operational measures were ordered as an emergency to ensure adequate management of the emergency situation. At this moment, the prefect of Tulcea county, Alexandru Dan Munteanu, as commander of the action, is in the field, together with the commander of the intervention, the head of the Delta Emergency Situations Inspectorate of Tulcea county and the technical support group for the management of emergency situations generated by floods, dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena”, it is stated in the press release.

According to the source, specialized forces and means belonging to the Delta Emergency Situations Inspectorate of Tulcea county, the Forestry Directorate, the Tulcea Water Management System and the Voluntary Service for Emergency Situations of Mahmudia commune were deployed in the field.
In April, during a meeting of the County Committee for Emergency Situations, the vice-mayor of the Mahmudia commune, Vasilică Uncu, announced that the local authority had begun strengthening the dike that protects an agricultural area, so that the area in question would not be flooded, and the local authority not to pay compensation. According to the data from that time, the dike is eroded in certain portions up to 80%, and it was intervened daily with bags of earth.
And in the year 2021, the Mahmudia Municipality Municipality reported infiltrations in the dike of the Carasuhat development, an area previously renatured with the support of European funds at the initiative of the World Wildlife Fund, in partnership with the local authority, informs Agerpres.
