Catapults and shooting stars at Peter Van de Veire’s farewell in Sportpaleis

Not one, but two famous heads who took to the skies. A parade of stars. And a big purple orb. The farewell party of Peter Van de Veire (50) in the Sportpaleis was like the (former) radio maker himself: slightly bombastic.

Eight o’clock. That’s how long the thank-you party in the Sportpaleis lasted. On Friday morning, Peter Van de Veire presented his last morning show at MNM, after thirteen years of service. Before that, he was already a strong holder at Studio Brussel. It is still unclear what exactly Van de Veire will do next to his TV work. The intention on Saturday was mainly to look back and celebrate.

That happened in multiples. In a superman suit, Van de Veire was catapulted over the heads of his audience towards the stage, where he was presented with a huge purple orb. Each time he pressed it, a guest appeared. From Sam Gooris and Van Echelpoel who came to sing their hits to Ingeborg and her son, MNM DJ Robin Keyaert, who came to give a large chocolate pot as a present.

The club of sidekicks also got their moment. Julie Van den Steen got into her Donald Trump costume, in which she once had to present for a month, and Nasrien Cnops treated the Sportpaleis to Bed of roses from her hero Bon Jovi. Eva Daeleman and Lieselot Ooms, the very first sidekicks, left a video message for Van de Veire. His last assistants, Kawtar Ehlalouch and Wanne Synnave, sang a surprise song with the other MNM presenters.

Euphoria

What Van de Veire does, Niels Destadsbader can also do. During Regi’s DJ set, he let himself be lifted above the crowd with a cable, and flew around the room. On the ground floor, the singer slipped and made a fall, but he spontaneously incorporated that into his show.

Gert Verhulst and James Cooke came to sing, just like Tom Waes with his Two beers – cast by Jeroen Meus for the occasion. There were performances by Willy Sommers, Metejoor and Gers Pardoel. But also from the Swedish Loreen. As a regular commentator (and fan) of the Song Contest, Van de Veire had asked the ex-winner for her world hit Euphoria to come sing. Van de Veire went the extra mile and sang his song himself In dj in.

With Kobe Ilsen and Viktor Verhulst, among others, DJ sets followed, as an afterparty. The full house almost literally got what it paid for: a Great Peter Van de Veire Sportpaleis Show. Time will tell how the man can top that.
