For as long as 56-year-old Segimon Rovira can remember, the sunny stretch of beach on the Costa Brava in Catalonia in Spain has been visited by nudists.
Now he tells, opposite The Guardianthat he has started to feel self-conscious on the beach after more and more tourists visit the beach – wearing swimwear.
– Before, people would come to a nude beach and either leave or undress. Now they stay and keep their bathing suits on, says Rovira to the newspaper.
– Lack of prescription
He goes on to say that many bathers with clothes on make the nudists on site uncomfortable.
– There is a lack of respect, says Rovira, who heads a nudist association in Catalonia.
He and other nudists in the area are now fighting back against clothed tourists with a campaign aimed at protecting the nudist tradition on around 50 beaches in the region.
The head of the association says that it is perfectly legal to dress naked on beaches in Spain, but that nudists have a habit of going to their own nudist beaches so as not to “bother” non-nudists.
According to The Guardian, the association has now sent a letter to the Catalan government asking for a meeting. They describe the topic of the meeting as “the discrimination nudists face on the beaches of Catalonia”.
– Keeps the clothes
Despite specific proposals such as better signage on nudist trends to campaigns aimed at educating the public, they have not received a response from the authorities.
– There are nudists who have stopped going to some beaches because they are too crowded and there are lots of people in bathing suits there which makes them feel uncomfortable, says Rovira.
Many also keep their clothes on for fear of ending up naked in the background of tourist pictures from the beach.
According to Rovira, it should be worst for the women who are particularly stared at or harassed.
