The Secretary of Public Health, Carmen Cabezas, is concerned that after the summer holidays vaccination does not take off, especially in the 20 to 39-year-old group, a group that has warned that it is not without risk, because in the Fifth wave, there were 319 admitted to the ICU and 9 deaths of those ages.
In an interview on Rac1 this Sunday, Cabezas stressed that Health has “more than 1.5 million vaccines in the fridge“waiting for arms, with which one could” practically “end the vaccination of the Catalan population and reach a” sufficiently high percentage “of immunized.
Cabezas has admitted that Health expected that by the end of August vaccination would pick up again after the summer break, but this “has not yet occurred“, although he trusts that he will do so at the beginning of the school year -September 13-, since it is then that in general” people are back at their habitual residence. “
The Secretary of Public Health has indicated that the group that “worries” him the most is those between 20 and 39 years old, since a third of them have not yet started vaccination, despite the fact that they have been able to do so for two months. Although today getting vaccinated in Catalonia is “very easy“, according to Cabezas, since there are numerous points where to do it with or without an appointment, the youngest continue to go dropper, because have a lower perception of risk.
However, this group represents half of the infections of the fifth wave, a total of 102,000 cases, of which 2,500 were admitted, 319 of them ended up in the ICU, and 9 deaths were registered, explained the Secretary of Public Health with figures until last Wednesday.
In order to attract young people, he explained that Salud is talking with ‘influencers’, carrying out social media work and addressing initiatives with the Department of Culture and the Ministry of Youth of the Generalitat: “We are turning to many things to encourage young people to get vaccinated and to recognize those who have already done it“, has affirmed.
Refering to third dose, has pointed out that it is still being studied within the framework of the State which groups would be recipients -surely immunosuppressed or people in very old age residences-, although this it wouldn’t start until october, has pointed out.
In reference to the vaccination of under 12 years, is not yet approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), but Cabezas has pointed out that Pfizer and Moderna they are studying it and that “around January” immunization could be extended to this group, he estimated.
