Catalan independence fighters back in jail

The Spanish court on Friday revoked the semi-open prison regime for nine leaders of the Catalan independence movement.

The Catalan independence fighters, who have been in full-time jail since yesterday, had previously received prison sentences of nine to 12 years. In 2017 they had attempted to tear their region off Spain.

Catalonia’s penitentiary administration had granted the nine a prison regime in June that allowed them to go home on weekends. In addition, former Vice President Oriol Junqueras, five other ex-members of the regional government, former regional parliament chair Carme Forcadell, and the leaders of the separatist associations ANC and Omnium Cultural, Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart, have been allowed to conduct the leave prison to go to work or for voluntary activities.

The Spanish public prosecutor’s office appealed against this to a local judge and, after it dismissed the appeal, to the Tribunal Supremo. The magistrates of this Supreme Court ruled that the granting of the semi-open prison regime was “premature.”
