Cat survives 52 days in empty house

New residents of a house in Schiedam were shocked when they opened the door of their newly purchased home last Saturday: a very emaciated cat flew out of the building that had been locked up there for 52 days.

The new owners had bought the house blind at an auction after the previous occupant had left with the northern sun. No one had been in the house since the previous owner left in early July.

The animal ambulance was able to catch the animal and take it back to recuperate. The tomcat, now called Finn, had lost weight and was upset by his solitary stay, but regained strength after some food, an IV, a deworming and vaccinations. However, there was paper in his stool, a sign that he was desperately looking for something to eat.

“What a terrible idea that he has been looking for food for so long,” said a shelter employee on Facebook. “There must have been something of a dripping tap”, speculates Dik Nagtegaal of the Animal Protection at broadcaster Rijnmond about how Finn must have quenched his thirst.

New owner

Due to his bad experience, Finn has become anxious and sometimes blows at the emergency personnel. “It will all be fine with the amount of patience, love and attention with which he is showered here by his caretakers,” assures the animal ambulance.

The police are still looking for the previous owner of the house to find out how Finn could have stayed behind in the empty house. The shelter will soon be looking for a new home for the male.

A crowdfunding campaign to finance the care costs is successful: the target amount of 428.85 has already been more than doubled.
