Castres. Pays d’Autan hospital: ten years already and still full of projects

the essential
Ten years ago already, the hospitals of Castres and Mazamet moved to the new site of Causse. The establishment has become the hub of the territory and is preparing its anniversary with major projects such as a second scanner and MRI, new services, etc.

It was one of the major and structuring events of regional planning in the south of the Tarn at the beginning of the 2000s. Just ten years ago, the two hospitals of Castres and Mazamet closed their doors to merge within the Pays d’Autan hospital on the Causse. It was then the culmination of long years of preparation and merger in order to achieve a real merger and not an absorption of one by the other.

“It was truly a pioneering spirit to engage in such an experience” notes the current director of Chic Castres-Mazamet Philippe Péridont, who continues: “This merger was really a success, knowing how to preserve the two cultures of each establishment.”

From a very formal point of view, it is not certain that the Chic will be able to celebrate this anniversary by the end of the year because of the health crisis obviously. But it is not just the Covid in the current medical world and the management of Chic continues to project itself into the future with some significant prospects for the coming weeks.

Two scanners and two MRIs

Pursuing its ambition of “a pivotal establishment in the southern Tarn region”, the Pays d’Autan hospital will soon be equipped with two additional radiology facilities. A second scanner will be installed during the month of May and a second MRI unit is scheduled for the start of the September / October school year. Given the demand, this reinforcement had become absolutely necessary for the Chic to respond to its missions. In the same vein, but from a therapeutic and surgical point of view, the Causse hospital will continue to accelerate its activity in oncology. “In 2020, we performed 300 oncology surgeries, says the director. This is a very, very important area for us.”

develop consultations

In another register, the establishment has the will this year, thanks to a work undertaken with the medical community, to develop its capacity of consultations in fields as diverse as surgery, orthopedic in particular, ENT or urology. Areas where the expectations of patients from the south of the Tarn are high. In the same vein, Chic is deploying new tools for so-called “day” hospitalization in areas such as cardiology and pneumology. And even preparing a pediatric day hospital project for in a few months.

20 more places in a new SSR

To cope with the growing demand in the basin for so-called SSR beds (follow-up and rehabilitation care), the Chic obtained this year from the ARS the authorization to set up a new service of twenty places which will open in September. at the old Mazamet hospital, there or already in 2019, a sector of 18 SSR beds had been set up. As a result, the current pressure on these services should improve significantly by the end of the year.

experiments

In 2021, Chic Castres-Mazamet will finally have had the opportunity to implement two experiments tested during the Covid crisis. It is first of all the constitution of a mobile hygiene team which can intervene in the EHPADs of the basin which do not have a specific team in order to bring them help and advice.

And very soon, a night nurse’s position will be set up in the basin that can intervene in eight EHPADs in the partner territory in close connection with the emergency department. These establishments do not have a nurse present at night.

initial training, the sinews of war

And to finish this overview of the outlook for 2021, it is also on the side of the IFSI (nursing training institute) that there will be something new this year. The Castres nursing school, attached to Chic, has already seen its training capacity in nursing assistants increase in September 2020, from 50 to 62 students. The effort made by the IFSI for the training of nurses is also reinforced with a capacity of 65 nurses or nurses graduates each year from now on. A figure there also in clear progression.
