Castilla y León Implements Intranasal Flu Vaccination for Children: 2023 Update

LVM.- The Governing Council of the Junta de Castilla y León has given the green light to the acquisition of 25,000 intranasal vaccine doses intended to immunize the child population of the Community against influenza. The measure seeks to meet the seasonal vaccination needs of children between 24 and 59 months of age. This innovative strategy is part of the update of the official schedule of systematic vaccinations for the year 2023.

The General Directorate of Public Health has led the processing of this important measure that aims to provide greater protection to children in Castilla y León against the flu. Intranasal vaccine doses, with a total cost of 445,454 euros, have stood out for presenting a more effective immune response when administered through the nose, compared to traditional parenteral administration vaccines.

The use of this modality of intranasal vaccination has specifically targeted children between 24 and 59 months of age. On the other hand, parenteral administration vaccines will be reserved for younger children, between 6 and 23 months, because they are administered directly into the main route of entry of the pathogen into the body. In addition to their effectiveness, intranasal vaccines have proven to be more accepted by both health professionals and parents.

The total investment allocated by the Ministry of Health for the acquisition of vaccines this year amounts to 34,257,012 million euros, which represents a notable increase of 53.2% compared to the previous year. This figure reflects the commitment of the community to guarantee the health and well-being of its child population, through more effective and modern vaccination strategies.
