Casper Ruud, n.5 in tennis in the world and last year’s finalist at the US Open, was eliminated in the second round in Flushing Meadows by the Chinese Zhizhen Zhang, 67th in the ATP rankings.
The 24-year-old Norwegian was beaten in five sets, with a score of 6-4 5-7 6-2 0-6 6-2. The first Chinese to surpass a player in the top five rankings, 26-year-old Zhang will now face Australia’s Rinky Hijikata (110th) for a place in the round of 16 of the grand slam tournament.
