This tug-of-war was probably worth it: Daniel Bares had written his name on the notepads of half of Upper Austria with 27 goals in the previous season for regional league west club SK Schärding – in the end, Union Mondsee beat one in the fight for the 24-year-old Czech numerous competitors. And that, even though things hadn’t looked good for a long time, as sports director Johann Loibichler has now revealed: “Daniel was actually already 99 percent with Gurten. When I got a call that the change had fallen through at the last second, I immediately Everything is trying to bind him to us immediately.” Luckily, as it turned out in retrospect. “The next day, Wacker Burghausen from the German Regional League contacted him and the contract was already signed,” says Loibichler with a smile. The patience paid off: For months we were in contact with the attacker, who came from the Czech Republic to Lower Austria at the beginning of 2022. “We knew relatively quickly that Lukas Leitner would end his career, and then we watched Daniel several times. Strikers aren’t a dime a dozen, we’re glad it worked out.”
Quality of life spoke for Mondsee
Why did Bares decide to join coach Christoph Mamoser’s team despite financially more lucrative offers? “We were at it for a long time and also helped him with a job and looking for an apartment. He can see Lake Mondsee directly from his living room. That’s a quality of life that not everyone has.”
No wonder that the striker is getting better and better: against SPG Wels 1b he scored twice and added two goals – Bares already has a total of seven goals this season. Nevertheless, there is no need to be afraid that success will go to his head: “Daniel is very introverted and helpful to the team. He invests a lot in the team and is making it outstanding,” says Mondsee coach Mamoser, praising his new goal guarantee.
