Salvadoran epidemiologist Jorge Panameño pointed out that El Salvador is approaching a sixth wave of covid-19 cases.

The Panamanian added that cases have been increasing for a couple of weeks and, although they should be mild, he recalled that the pandemic has variants and the one that has predominated is Omicron.

The Panamanian said that many people, including health authorities, began to sing victory over the reduction of covid cases and let their guard down on protective measures.

The doctor specified that there are mathematical models that have anticipated the covid-19 scenario for years, so he wonders how it is possible that in El Salvador they are not preparing for the threats that are being announced, through institutions and universities that study the pandemic movement.

The Panamanian said it is urgent that health authorities take action, that unvaccinated people are vaccinated and that the elderly or people with chronic diseases are careful and do not forget to wear masks and maintain prevention measures.

The doctor said that at this time the risk of covid-19 infection is high and pointed out that despite having the three doses of the vaccines, what they do is only reduce the risk of dying and reduce the risk of going to the hospital, but it does not prevent the person from becoming infected. “We must continue to wear the mask, keeping our distance, avoiding crowds. It should never have been recommended to stop wearing a mask, ”said Jorge Panameño, an infectious disease doctor.
