Casemiro steps up the pressure on a boycott of Brazil

After the victory of Brazil against Ecuador (2-0), this Friday in Porto Alegre as part of the qualifications for the World Cup, the captain of the Seleçao Casemiro promised a position taken by the players of his team on the Copa America, relocated a few days ago in his country. Unfavorable to the decision of his Federation due to the health crisis, the Real Madrid player could announce a boycott of the competition.

The vagueness is still great around the holding of the Copa America (June 13 – July 10). Since last Monday, the day when we learned of the relocation of the competition to Brazil when it was to take place in Colombia and Argentina, voices have been rising to protest against this decision taken by the Auriverde Federation with Conmebol. In the background, the Covid-19 epidemic which has claimed more than 470,000 victims, making Brazil the second country in the world most bereaved by the pandemic.

While the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, threatened to cancel the meetings which will take place in his city (8 in total including the final at the Maracana), the rumor of a boycott of the Seleçao players playing in Europe circulated in the Brazilian media. According to local media, Neymar and his partners would not have appreciated learning of this decision in the press, and not from the leaders of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Casemiro: “Everyone knows our position, it is very clear”

On Friday, after Brazil’s victory over Ecuador (2-0) in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, captain Casemiro, considered the leader of the movement, was the only player to speak on the topic. “Everyone knows our position, it is very clear,” said the Real Madrid midfielder, visibly annoyed by the situation at the TV Globo microphone. “We cannot broach this subject today, but we want to give our opinion because a lot of things have happened,” he added.

Casemiro has hinted that he could speak on behalf of the whole group, and not just the Brazilians of Europe, after the 2nd qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup, Tuesday night on the lawn of Paraguay.
