Case of giving illegal Halal certification, 4 people from Mumbai caught, were not able to answer the questions

STF of Uttar Pradesh has arrested four members of Halal Council of India in the case of fraud by issuing illegal Halal certificates. It is alleged that these people were making illegal extortion money from various companies. Whereas the council is neither authorized to issue such certificates nor does it test the samples of any product.

STF has arrested Halal Council of India President Maulana Habib Yusuf Patel, Vice President Maulana Mueed Sheer Sapadia, General Secretary Mohammad Tahir Zakir Hussain Chauhan, Treasurer Mohammad Anwar. These four arrested accused are residents of Mumbai.

The four accused were arrested only after interrogation at STF Headquarters, Lucknow. It is being told that the members of Halal Council of India were not able to answer all the questions during interrogation. The Council was illegally issuing Halal certificates for food items other than meat and meat products on behalf of Mumbai.

Halal Council of India charges different rupees per certificate and per product from different companies every year. The organization charges Rs 10,000 per certificate and Rs 1,000 per product. This council is not authorized to issue Halal certificate from the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies or any other government body.

Apart from this, Halal Council of India issued certificates to various companies to sell their products in the country and abroad, for which this organization is not authorized. The organization has not got any product lab tested for issuing Halal certificate. The council people did not even take samples of any product for testing, nor did any member of the council go to the company for enquiry.

It is being told that this organization was arbitrarily extorting money by issuing Halal certificates. Consumers of Halal products are being extorted by giving only Halal logo without any investigation and without any test. A different kind of financial burden was unnecessarily imposed on the companies. Such restaurants were also given Halal certificate even though the council has no control over the food served there.
