The police have warned of a new scam via messenger service. Unknown perpetrators captured several hundred euros in Western Pomerania-Greifswald.

Scammers keep coming up with new scams to take the elderly out of their money. In this case, a couple from the vicinity of Greifswald (57 and 62 years old) reported to the police. According to the police, the perpetrator or perpetrators sent a whatsapp message to the wife. In it, they pretend to be their daughter, who allegedly has a new phone and therefore wrote from an unknown number.

Alleged daughter asks for money via whatsapp

With the words “Hello mom, I have a new phone number. Cell phone and SIM are broken. I dropped the cell phone and a car drove over it. The old number can be removed” and further messages the perpetrator was able to gain her trust. Another message also reported an open invoice for more than 2,000 euros. Due to the destroyed cell phone and the no longer available internet banking, the alleged daughter would no longer have had the opportunity to transfer the money herself. The mother should please give instructions.

Cheating is revealed by phone call with real daughter

The fraudster succeeded in persuading the woman to have the husband transfer the money. However, due to a transfer limit, only part of the amount could be sent. The rest should follow in the following days. After the husband phoned the real daughter the following day, the fraud was finally exposed.

Police: Always contact the person concerned

The police advise: “If you get a message like this, be suspicious. Call the person concerned and make sure. Ask personal questions that only the person concerned can answer. If in doubt, report them the incident to the police. If money has already been transferred, contact the bank and the police immediately.
