Case against artist Jan Fabre initiated on Tuesday: talk of…

The case against Jan Fabre will be opened before the criminal court of Antwerp on Tuesday. The artist and theater maker is accused of violence, bullying or unwanted sexual behavior at work, as well as indecent assault on a person. There are twelve victims, all of whom worked for his dance company Troubleyn.

In September 2018, an open letter from twenty (former) employees of Troubleyn appeared in the media, stating that they had experienced transgressive behaviour. They accused Fabre of bullying, intimidation, abuse of power, psychological games and sexually abusive behavior, which allegedly led several members to leave the group and seek psychological help.

The labor inspectorate then started an investigation, as it concerned a situation on – or linked to – the workplace. Fabre reacted with dismay at the allegations and said in a statement that it had never been his intention to intimidate or hurt people psychologically or sexually.

The labor prosecutor decided in June to bring the file to the criminal court. The case will be initiated on Tuesday and a date for the treatment will be set.
