Casasco confirmed as president of the sports medicine federation

Maurizio Casasco was re-elected as president of the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine (FMSI) with 98% of the votes cast by secret ballot by the 100 delegates present out of 101 entitled to vote in the elective assembly held today in Rome.

Casasco, who is also president of the European federation (Efsma) and a member of the board of the world federation (Fims), saw his programmatic report for the four-year period 2025-2028 approved with a long standing ovation by the assembly, in which he underlined how it is necessary to “increasingly enhance the FMSI – the only scientific society of sports medicine recognized in Italy by the Ministry of Health – as an entity of excellence in response to the needs of the community and institutions”.

Strengthened by the recognition at EU level of the specialty in Sports Medicine under his presidency, Casasco recalled the importance of continuing to strengthen the themes on which the FMSI has distinguished itself in recent years: the role of Sports Medicine specialists in society for the prevention and fight against non-communicable diseases, which kill 41 million people every year, representing 74% of all deaths globally, as already highlighted in his hearing at the UN; the expansion of the areas of intervention of the Sports Medicine specialist in the world of work through primary and secondary prevention programs based on physical exercise as an essential and cost-effective medical tool, to further affirm the federal theme “biological age, chronological age” in the various contexts of productivity, insurance and retirement age; the prescription of physical exercise in the right dose, like a drug, to improve the state of health and quality of life of people and, consequently, to save money for the National Health System: a topic that belongs to the know-how of the FMSI, especially because it was in Italy that the post-graduate university specialization school of Sports Medicine was born, the first in the world in 1957; the fight against doping, thanks also to a new Anti-Doping Laboratory in Rome, already recognized as an excellence worldwide, the only one in Italy accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), out of only 30 laboratories currently active in the world, and now further strengthened with an investment of 18 million euros allocated in the latest Budget Law.

In his speech, President Casasco also underlined how fundamental it is, in the next four years, to “invest in a renewed training and research project through a process of exchange and dissemination of knowledge at an international level”. And he also highlighted the importance of investing in young people: “I am thinking – he said – of a sort of Erasmus project of Sports Medicine in Europe, to whose development my role as Efsma president can undoubtedly contribute”, in addition to the consolidation of relationships with specialists and Specialization Schools.

Professor Attilio Parisi, rector of the Foro Italico University of Sport in Rome, was the most voted among the councilors.
