Carlos Palacios, lawyer for former President Horacio Cartes, was consulted about the investigations into offshore finance in the “Pandora Papers”, and said that the answer is very simple and there is nothing illegal.
“Cartes decided to buy an apartment for his children in Miami in 2011, and received a recommendation from Florida lawyers, that when real estate is acquired in that country, do it through SRL, it is more advantageous because nobody buys the units in a personal capacity, ”he explained.
He argued that there is nothing illegal, it was an investment that like many other families do in Florida. “There is no secret, or nothing to hide, it is public information, which is even on the Internet sites of the Panamanian registry,” he said.
He also said that when the accountant was asked if this was included in the declaration of assets presented to the Comptroller’s Office, he replied that it will not be included, as it is an asset that was acquired for the children of Cartes.
