The Kaliningrad plant “Avtotor” has begun production of cars of the Chinese brand BAIC. This was reported in the press service of the enterprise.
So far, two models are being produced on the same conveyor at the same time: a compact five-seater crossover and a sedan with an atmospheric 1.5-liter engine. By the end of the year, the partners plan to add five more options to this range, including SUVs and an electric car.
“The implementation of joint projects between Avtotor and BAIC provides for a phased increase in localization and deepening of production technology, work aimed at maximizing the involvement of local component manufacturers in production chains. We also see great prospects for the development of cooperation in many other areas, taking into account the large-scale plans of Avtotor to create the production of electric vehicles and move towards the development of transport using new types of energy,” said Valery Gorbunov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Russian auto holding.
At the first stage of the joint Russian-Chinese production in Kaliningrad, only the assembly of machines is carried out. From 2024, the enterprise will switch to a full cycle with welding and painting of bodies, followed by the localization of paintwork materials and stamping.
