Athens is imposing restrictions on car traffic to reduce emissions and alleviate congestion. On even days of the month, only cars with even registration numbers will have access to the center of the Greek capital. Those with odd numbers will be allowed to enter only on odd days, Kathimerini writes.

The measure will be valid from 7 am to 8 pm on days until Thursday, and on Friday – until 3 pm. For violations, the fine is 100 euros.

The vehicles excluded from the measures are electric, hybrid, gas or LPG, as well as Euro 6 cars. Owners of this type of environmentally friendly car can issue a special digital card for free movement in the center. On certain days there is a ban on the movement of old cars, buses and trucks over 2 tons. The restrictions in Athens will be in force until August next year.

At the same time, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached a record level in 2020. Due to the economic slowdown due to the coronavirus, new emissions actually fell by 5.6% last year. However, according to the WCO, this has no “noticeable impact on the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the rate of their growth.” According to WCO Secretary-General Peter Taala, the report is “a clear scientific message to COP26 climate change negotiators” – the UN climate conference in Glasgow this Sunday. Days before the meeting, Saudi Arabia and China promised “carbon neutrality” by 2060.
