Carrefour launches meal delivery by swallowing Dejbox

Its hypermarkets will prepare the dishes delivered by this start-up to employees of partner companies.

The start-up Dejbox (here its premises in Marcq-en-Barœul, in the North) achieved more than 10 million euros in turnover in 2019.

The strategic shift is revealing of the upheavals in food distribution. Carrefour, which had refused to do so far, is entering the meal delivery market; booming for years, it is taking stomach shares from traditional distributors, especially in the city center.

To diversify and adapt its offer to the new consumption habits of the French, the group, which is also developing, like its rivals, a restaurant offer in the heart of its stores, bought 60% of Dejbox. This start-up, born in 2015, serves 400,000 meals per month in the agglomerations of Lille, Lyon, Paris, Bordeaux, Nantes and Grenoble.

“This acquisition, which reflects Carrefour’s desire to become the leader in food e-commerce, is strategic, says Amélie Oudéa-Castera, director of digital and e-commerce for the group. It will allow us to invest in the fast-growing segment of meal delivery with a quality-oriented and accessible offer
