Matt Carpenter homered twice and tied his career high with seven RBIs as he led the New York Yankees to an 18-4 sweep of the Chicago Cubs over the weekend, their 11th win in 12 games.

The 36-year-old was signed May 26 after spending the first seven weeks with Triple-A affiliate Round Rock of Texas. Carpenter, a three-time All-Star with St. Louis and coming off three straight seasons of decline, became the second player since 1900 to hit six home runs in his first 10 games for a team, after Trevor Story did with Colorado in 2016.

Carpenter walked a packed house to tie the score, when New York hit Keegan Thompson in a five-run first inning and hit a three-run homer off Daniel Norris for an 8-1 lead in the second. He added a two-run homer off Alec Mills in the sixth for his first multi-homer game in four years and an RBI double in the seventh off Sean Newcomb.

Carpenter is batting .333 with 13 RBIs, quickly becoming a team and fan favorite.

For the Yankees, the Venezuelan Marwin González 5-0.

For the Cubs, Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 4-2, and Willson Contreras 2-0. Dominicans Jonathan Villar 4-0, and Christopher Morel 5-0 with a run scored.
