Caroline Van der Plas has warned the members of her party that BBB “can get a lot in the cabinet formation, but will also have to give”. At the general membership meeting of BBB in Nieuwegein, she said that there will be things that BBB will have to say that “we have to let go of something for a while”.
She emphasized that PVV, VVD and NSC will also have to hand in things. According to Van der Plas, her supporters do not have to worry that BBB will say yes and amen to everything. “But we have to get on with the national interest.”
Agriculture and nitrogen
She did not want to go into too much detail about the content of the negotiations, but when asked afterwards what BBB wanted to achieve, she replied that “it is clear that BBB wants fairer and more just regulations in the field of agriculture”. Van der Plas also stated that she wants to get “very good policy” for nitrogen.
At the members’ meeting, the BBB leader said that she wants to participate constructively in the formation of a cabinet that will come up with “realistic policies”. She believes that the Netherlands can no longer wait for a new cabinet. She is confident that this will be ready before the summer recess.
Programkabinet
This week, informant Putters advised to negotiate a ‘program cabinet’ in the near future. He sees this as a “form that varies on the model of an extra-parliamentary cabinet”. PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB must first conclude a concise coalition agreement in broad terms about “frameworks and policy goals”. The new ministers must then develop that agreement into concrete measures in a ‘government programme’.
The list of candidates for the European elections was also determined at the (but partly public) BBB members’ meeting. The party leader for BBB will be Sander Smit. He was previously a policy advisor to the EPP (Christian Democrats) group in the European Parliament. BBB wants to join the EPP after the elections.
