Party leader of the BoerCurgerBeweging Caroline van der Plas believes that politicians and the media pay too little attention to problems in the region. She thinks it is “really unacceptable” that on Monday evening the talk show Khalid & Sophie was “laughable” about a man who was interviewed about nuisance asylum seekers in Budel.
The reporter interviewed a resident of Budel who checks bags at a supermarket to prevent shoplifting. Together with concerned neighbors, he started a vigilante group. PvdD party leader Esther Ouwehand wondered: “Is this real?” Comedian Raoul Heertje joked that he finds the man “not intimidating at all”. “He has a sweater that is much too tight and he is much too fat.”
BBB faction chairman Van der Plas was also a guest in the talk show and could not laugh at the item. “First of all, someone is being made to look like a fool,” Van der Plas responds the day after the broadcast in Goedemorgen Nederland on NPO 1. She addresses Ouwehand and Heertje. “They have no idea what is going on in the region.”

“Budel has had a lot of problems with nuisance asylum seekers for years,” says Van der Plas. “The supermarket entrepreneur stopped because so much was stolen. Daughters of families are no longer dropped off at the train station because there is a lot of inconvenience. There is nuisance on the trains at Maarheeze. The bus doesn’t even stop at the asylum center anymore, because the bus drivers say: We don’t do this anymore.”
“A man who explains this on the air and stands at the door of a supermarket to check people’s bags exposes a serious problem. There’s not enough police to enforce it,” the BBB leader said.
‘Go to Budel for a week’
A day later, she is still concerned about the attitude of her tablemates in Khalid & Sophie. “There was laughter, like: ‘he is wearing a sweater that is too tight and he is too fat’. Esther Ouwehand looks at the images and says: Is this real? I thought: yes Esther, yes. This is real. This is what is happening in the region. This is what happens in the real world.”

According to Van der Plas, politicians and the media pay insufficient attention to the region. “It seems as if The Hague and Hilversum are sitting on a kind of throne looking down on all the judgments that exist. Then I think: go to Budel for a week and talk to the people there about what they are experiencing and stop laughing, especially about this man. I just don’t think it’s possible.”
