Caroline van de Pol Nominated as Mayor of Castricum, Will Leave Terschelling Amidst Council Crisis

Caroline van de Pol will probably leave the municipality of Terschelling as mayor at the end of March. She was nominated as mayor of Castricum on Thursday evening.

Van de Pol announced this on Thursday evening at 10:15 p.m. halfway through an extra council meeting, in which the relationships between the mayor, municipal council and aldermen were discussed. The mayor had informed the five faction leaders shortly beforehand and then left. Answers to questions that councilors and aldermen still have for her will not be available until Friday at the earliest.

Shortly after her departure from the debate, Local Interest group leader René Bultena spoke of “an insult to the council”. The improvement process has cost the community a ton, he said.

Trust canceled

The municipality of Terschelling has been in a crisis of governance and confidence for fifteen months. On Thursday evening, the extra public council meeting should reveal whether relations have improved, after the city council dismissed the mayor in vain in January and the aldermen had also lost confidence in her.

It soon became apparent on Thursday evening that both the city council and aldermen see no improvement in the relationship with the mayor. Van de Pol was subject to strong criticism and even serious accusations. Accusations of unsafe working conditions were made on both sides. In the second round, the mayor was suddenly called away from the debate.

After an adjournment, the question round continued as if nothing had happened, but during the third speaker Van de Pol suddenly said that she wanted to retreat to her room and expected the group leaders there fifteen minutes later, at 10 p.m. The council then decided to suspend the debate again.

More later.
