Maes’ character Mieke disappeared from the series for a few weeks after relationship problems, but can now be seen again in the VTM soap. Although with a new look. The actress went from dark brown to a natural gray shade. An adjustment for many loyal viewers. It’s raining reactions on social media: not everyone is a fan, to say the least. “Dark is much more classy, this is ugly and makes her look old”: it is another of the more respectful comments. “What people say: je m’en fou,” says the actress. “I know that I will be on TV and therefore have an exemplary role, but I don’t have to be the perfect picture and I want to be able to go gray in a healthy way. Just leave things alone and be yourself.”

The tight tailor-made suits that belonged to Mieke also seem to be a thing of the past. At Caroline’s own request, the character now wears wider sweaters more often. “Let them write that they think I’m fatter: I have no problem with that. I now only save the positive messages, people who say: it makes you softer. It makes you a little rounder. I’m also a bit rounder. I quit smoking and I gained weight, voilà. Everyone has their sins, that’s okay. I’m only human. But I just want to be myself. And if people don’t like that: sorry. I also really liked myself with that short, sassy and dark haircut. With my black nails and my fitted suits. But I don’t fit in anymore, guys. It’s not possible anymore.”

Caroline’s ex-‘Family’ colleague Martine Jonckheere (67) preceded her. She also traded her blonde locks for a gray haircut years ago. “I am shocked when I hear that people still react this way to a woman with gray hair on TV,” Jonckheere said angrily. “That’s why there are few actresses who dare to admit to gray hair. Even Janine Bischops (81) once said to me: ‘No, I don’t do that.’ Women in showbiz always have to make sure they look younger than they are. Wrinkles are also not tolerated. That was the comment I got when I made my comeback in ‘Familie’. Kürt Rogiers has been gray for years, no one talks about that. On a man, gray represents wise and intelligent. A woman immediately loses her freshness, what a nonsense.”
“TV producers also immediately label women with gray hair as old. It is a male society that determines how women should look on screen. I am now going to play a small role in a new series, and the character is also older than me. 72. Well, that’s not so bad. It even shocks me. I get a lot of offers these days to play an 80-something grandmother. But then I think: damn it, I’m not going to give in to that,” Martine concludes.
