Caroline writes in her book that on January 10 of this year she filed a report of ‘libel, insult and slander’ against Martien, Maxime and Erica. It would involve six pages of accusations. ‘So I spent four and a half hours at the police station and now I am here with a report that covers six pages. Six pages describing the horror inflicted on me over the past four years.’
Although she has been looking forward to this day, she admits that she is also ‘terrified’. ‘I was dreading it, but I had no choice. I was up. Drained. The stretch was completely gone. If I didn’t stand up for myself now, it would be over.’ According to Caroline, the family made her life “an indescribable hell for four years.” They allegedly spread lies, made false accusations and made hurtful comments. Erica, Maxime and Martien would also spread ‘disparaging characterizations’ about her in television programs, books, during interviews, on the internet and all kinds of social media channels.
Although she blames the family for these actions, she also holds herself responsible. ‘All this time I held my breath and kept my mouth shut because I didn’t want to stoop to their level. I convinced myself that the outside world would take their stories with a grain of salt, because there is always another side to the story. But that didn’t happen and that was my own fault.’
She feels strong after reporting the crime and is happy that she has finally drawn the ‘red line’. ‘Until here and no further.’ At the same time, tears roll down her cheeks, she writes. ‘I’m not crying out of sadness, but because I found the courage to stand up for myself. It’s been a long time since I felt this strong and powerful.’
