Caroline Devismes Shines in Autobiographical Musical: “The Day I Became a Black Singer”

Moving on to the theater after being the last reviewer of the Folies Bergère, Caroline Devismes gives everything in an autobiographical musical piece full of punch.

Caroline Devismes is the “little beast that rises, rises, rises”, beast of the stage of course. After being the last reviewer at the Folies Bergère, we saw her in The Idiot, the Picture of Dorian Grayand she is currently in Avignon in The Misanthrope, directed by Thomas le Douarec. The latter also signs that of Day I became a black singera funk musical piece, where Caroline Devismes recounts her fabulous destiny, played at the Théâtre des Lucioles until July 29.

Funky Lady

From her early childhood, where she heard Diana Ross, Caroline wanted to become a “black singer”. When she discovers at 8 years old that her unknown father is African-American living in Dallas, she sees in it the confirmation of her vocation. Accompanied by Alex Anglio on drums and Mehdi Bourayou on keyboards, she borrows songs from her idols’ repertoire that recount the stages of her life.

Appearing from the back, wearing a short metal dress that enhances her sublime legs, wearing frizzy blond hair, Caroline Devismes evokes Tina Turner, in a smaller frame, of course, but the filiation is there. The voice also impresses, as well as an energy that transports her to the four corners of the stage. Communication with the public is quickly established and she does not struggle to make him clap his hands, to take up choruses with her, and to make him dance on his seat.

The soundtrack of a life

On stage: no decor, no projection, no fireworks, but the beautiful lights of Stéphane Balny, and only Caroline and her talented musicians, Alex Anglio and Mehdi Bourayou, who also have fun acting. Caroline Devismes gives us the soundtrack of her life: Diana Ross and The Supremes, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Shirley Bassey, Jackson Five, Marvin Gaye, Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson…which she interprets with talent and conviction. But beyond the show, there is meaning. She stings and humors the a priori on skin pigmentations, and returns with insight to her visit to the Folies Bergères. A “wonderful place”, but where the criteria of beauty erase all the others, or almost.

The stage is Caroline Devismes’ natural environment, which she occupies with mad energy. His communication with the public is innate and unfeigned, sincere and sharing. Enthusiasm wins the room. The public gives him in return this living happiness which sings and twirls on the boards. Caroline Devismes confirms, in a new register, her talent noticed in the theater. That of an artist whose origins of her passion we discover.
