Carmen Yulín Cruz will inform this afternoon if the San Sebastian Street Festivities are going or not going

The mayor of San Juan Carmen Yulín Cruz will inform this afternoon its determination on the celebration of San Sebastian Street Parties before the multiple requests for cancellation of the cultural event due to the seismic sequence that affects the island.

The announcement will take place after the municipal executive consulted with several people and entities if the event, which is scheduled to start this Wednesday, must continue or not.

“During all this time I have listened carefully to the opinions for and against. I have heard the opinions of small politics and that of genuine solidarity ”he indicated.

Given that, he attacked those who have criticized his decision not to suspend the event that this year will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

He indicated that some of the opinions about the activity “are, without doubt, a product of the small policy that only cares about electoral calculation.”

The governor Wanda Vázquez Garced, for example, has been one of the voices that claimed the cancellation of the parties, although he indicated that the decision was up to the mayor.

Meanwhile, the archbishop of San Juan, Roberto González NievesHe recommended that the mass activity be postponed to the beginning of Lent. For its part, Sonora Ponceña canceled its participation in the activity.

Cruz acknowledged that other opinions “are born of genuine concern for the safety of our people”, but that he has also received calls from artisans and artists who need the event to generate income for their families.

“This is not about politics, it is about those who have not suffered in our own flesh the pain of losing our home, we can organize to create aid channels that are robust, consistent and that, as soon as possible we can find the way to a new reality, ”he said.

The mayor’s announcement is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the Roberto Clemento Coliseum, in San Juan.

A 6.4 earthquake shook Puerto Rico last week and multiple aftershocks of the seismic event continue to affect the island.

So far a dead person has been reported and, according to the authorities, $ 110 million in losses.
