Carmen won a Spanish literature prize: ‘she’ turned out to be three men

Carmen Mola has already published several well-received thrillers in Spain. In interviews, the writer regularly stated that she was a professor who wished to remain anonymous.

King at the ceremony

For her latest book, The Beast, the author won the important Spanish literature prize Planeta last week. The Spanish king was also present at the award ceremony last Friday, write foreign media.

When Mola was asked to come to the stage, three men appeared on the scene. It turned out to be Jorge Díaz, Antonio Mercero and Agustín Martínez. The three co-wrote the screenplays for several television programs and published several novels.

Criticism

The three say they came up with the pseudonym for Carmen Mola four years ago in order to ‘join forces’. “We weren’t hiding behind a woman, we were hiding behind a name,” the three told Spanish media this weekend.

The action has also come under criticism from the writers. Spanish activist and feminist Beatriz Gimeno believes the men are ‘fraudsters’ who have cheated readers with ‘a fake profile’. On the back of Mola’s books, the author was always depicted as a woman with her back to the camera.

Reading lists

Mola’s books have also appeared on reading lists in recent years promoting female authors who “help understand women’s realities and experiences.”

The book for which the men won the prize will be published next month by Planeta. That was one of the conditions for winning the prize.
