I grew up in the postwar period. I remember my childhood with love and gratitude. I think that time was very difficult for my family. But I didn’t see it. My mother spoke English, French, Italian and German, but her language was really specific. And in their sixteenth year, Carmen and her older sister Aida learned that their biological father was a German Wehrmacht officer who fell into captivity at the end of the war and most likely died. She never told Carlos, who raised them, that he was not their real father.

Her mother and the German officer met in 1940 in Berlin. She was married to Carlos, but even after six years the marriage was childless. From the new relationship a daughter Aida was born and Carmen a few years later.

I know that at the time I took the information about Manfred as fact. I cannot feel that it would have disturbed me. I just remembered my gut feeling. I thought that I could never read about this to you, our father Carlos, because he might think that he was asking you to. But I took him away, to the Mayers.
Even though the husbands were divorced, Carlos said he would take care of the children, not their father. He was very generous. And when the wolf was gone, Manfred didn’t bother. The mole died in Berlin after the wolves were finished. And he was raised by his father, the actress explains.
Carmen later found an angel in the theatre in Hradec Kralove, she married fellow actor Maxmilin Hornye, but the marriage did not work out. After the divorce she went to Prague with her three daughters, where she joined the Prague City Theatre.
Here she met Petr Kostka, whose former wife had died, and so Carmen began to take care of his two daughters. In 1972, she and Peter married and later had Tereza. Herekase took care of her ailing mother for the next five years, her mental and physical condition quickly deteriorating. She had to have a career and after her mother’s death she had difficulty returning to the stage.
Carmen Mayer is grateful for her fulfilling life and large family. She has a very good relationship with all of her daughters, six grandchildren and these great-grandchildren. She’s been in a number of crack scenes. He has performed at the Vinohrady Theatre, Na Fidlovace and Studio Two and with his daughter Tereza he has performed for two actresses at the Kalich Theatre.
